Much like in humans, massage therapy has a range of applications both in athletic horses and in those enjoying a more sedentary lifestyle!
As horses cannot tell us about their pain or restriction, this will manifest within their behaviour and performance, leading to:
Massage can help to relieve muscular tension and ‘knots’, leading to unrestricted movement and a general feeling of comfort and wellbeing. If left untreated, restrictions can manifest in various areas of the body as the horse picks up compensatory habits.
Benefits of massage can occur all over the body, including:
Massage is particularly important during a rehabilitation program, or when bringing a horse back into work (whether or not injury was the reason for turning away). It can also be of benefit to horses on box rest, or retired horses and ponies so as to keep them comfortable! Retrained racehorses can also greatly benefit from physical support during their change in career, as well as newly broken horses.
In addition, I can offer Kinesiology taping for your horse to support them through their work and/or rehabilitation. This will incur an additional cost.
I also have use of a thermal imaging camera that can be used as a visual aid to show areas of inflammation and heat. This is not intended as a diagnostic tool but images can be passed along to your vet along with a full report for additional charge.
